Maria Stahl, DNP, RN was appointed Department of Health (DOH) in Brevard’s administrator in November 2016 with the concurrence of Brevard County’s Board of Commissioners. Dr. Stahl has worked 37 years in public health practice. She has managed various public health programs in Brevard since 1995. Prior to relocation to Florida, Dr. Stahl worked for 13 years in public health practice in Buffalo, New York. Dr. Stahl earned her BSN in 1979 from SUNY at Buffalo, MSN in 2008 and her DNP in 2014 from the University of Central Florida.
Since 2016 Dr. Stahl has worked with community partners to enhance public health priorities in Brevard County including increasing access to health, behavioral health, and dental services for Brevard County citizens. She served thirteen of her 33 years in Public Health as Nursing Director at DOH-Brevard where she oversaw operations for family planning, school health, maternity, immunizations, refugee health, STD, dental, WIC, and disaster preparedness. During this time, she also served as the interim health officer for 5 months. Prior to this position she has held positions as Nursing Program Specialist and TB Program Coordinator from 1997-1998, Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor from 1998-2000, and Assistant Community Health Nursing Director from 2000-2003 with responsibilities for the School Health Program. Dr. Stahl has been an adjunct instructor for UCF since 2009 teaching community and public health nursing to undergraduate students.
In addition to her work experience, Dr. Stahl has been awarded numerous times for her professional acumen. Most recently she received the 2015 Prudential Financial Davis Productivity Awards for the Vaccine Support Program and Teen Pregnancy Reduction Program. In 2009 Dr. Stahl was awarded the Outstanding Nursing Leadership award for the Florida Public Health Nurses Association.
Dr. Stahl has extensive involvement in Brevard’s community organizations. She sits on several health advisory boards and councils including Space Coast Health Foundation Health Advisory Board, Health Council of East Central Florida where she was chair from 2014-2018, Brevard Opioid Task Force, Youth Mental Health Task Force. Dr. Stahl has also been instrumental in applying for and receiving grants worth over 1.2 million dollars to fund public health programs in the department.Dr. Stahl strives to build community relationships to promote health across the spectrum of ages of citizens in Brevard county.
