Merritt Island, Fla.This week, April 1 – 7, the Florida Department of Health in Brevard County (DOH-Brevard) is acknowledging National Public Health Week (NPHW). NPHW presents an opportunity for communities across the United States to reflect on the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving our health.

Public health professionals across Brevard County make it their life’s work to help keep people and communities healthy- from better maternal and child health to improvements in disease control and prevention to addressing environmental concerns and emergency preparedness.

"DOH-Brevard employees strive to improve the health of Brevard county citizens and visitors," stated Maria Stahl, DOH-Brevard Administrator. "And we are fortunate to have many community partners who work with us to achieve this goal as well."

In Brevard County, the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP)  is designed to address specific opportunities for improved health that have been identified by the community. The department has partnered with many  stakeholders to implement the CHIP and collaborates regularly to track progress.

DOH-Brevard offers many services and programs to protect public health at three clinics throughout the county including

  • Maternity program – prenatal care available to all low-income Brevard County residents, regardless of ability to pay
  • Pediatric dental clinics – available to Medicaid eligible and uninsured low-income children
  • Childhood immunizations – available to all children
  • WIC services – federally funded nutrition program for Women, Infants, and Children
  • Environmental Health – public education, routine inspections, investigation of complaints and enforcement of laws relating to safety and sanitation
