Merritt Island, Fla.—Three Brevard County municipalities have been named Healthy Weight Community Champions by the Florida Department of Health. The City of Palm Bay, the Town of Indialantic and the City of Satellite Beach have earned the 2017 designation. This is the second year both Palm Bay and Indialantic have earned this award.

"I congratulate all three municipalities for being recognized as Healthy Weight Community Champions,” said Florida Department of Health in Brevard County (DOH-Brevard) Administrator, Maria Stahl. “Local governments help shape our communities through policies and activities which promote healthy living and we are proud of the efforts made by the City of Palm Bay, the Town of Indialantic and the City of Satellite Beach."

The City of Palm Bay officially received recognition when Stahl, along with DOH-Brevard Health Educator Sophia Tomadakis, presented the Healthy Weight Community Champion recognition to Palm Bay Mayor William Capote at the March 2nd city council meeting.

"We would have not been able to win this award without the participation of our citizens,” said Mayor Capote. “In addition, I’m very proud of our residents for taking the initiative to exercise and eat healthy."

The Town of Indialantic was recognized at the town council meeting held March 8th where Tomadakis presented the Healthy Weight Community Champion recognition to Indialantic Mayor Dave Berkman.

"The Town of Indialantic is proud to be recognized by the state with the Healthy Weight Community Champion Award,” said Mayor Berkman. “We are a beachside community and we love being outdoors, surfing, swimming, bike riding, jogging and of course our Annual Witch Way 5K race so this award is perfect for our town!"

Tomadakis presented the Healthy Weight Community Champion recognition to Satellite Beach Mayor Frank Catino at the city council meeting held March 25th.

“I am proud of our community and the city for its efforts in providing activities for people of all ages,” said Mayor Catino.

The Community Champions program is part of the department’s Healthiest Weight Florida initiative. Healthiest Weight Florida is a public-private collaboration bringing together state agencies, not-for-profit organizations, businesses and entire communities to help Florida’s children and adults make consistent, informed choices about healthy eating and active living.
