A storm could cause both flooding and electrical outages. Both could affect how the sewer system is working. By minimizing water use during these times, there will be less of a chance that any sewage issues, including backups into your home, will occur.

Until both power has been restored and there is no visible sewage on the ground, every effort should be made to conserve water usage.

  • Minimize the use of washing machines and the flushing of toilets.
  • Utilize portable restrooms.
  • Fix any plumbing leaks.
  • While pump stations and sewage treatment plants are out of power, avoid adding water to sewer lines as it may cause it to clog and cause a back-up into your home.

Report any sewage spills to proper utility authorities for clean-up and sanitation. Such spills may be stabilized by the utility staff with an application of lime (calcium hydroxide). Restrict access to such areas for at least 24 hours and until no visible lime is present.
