The school based dental sealant program provides free sealants to children, after parental consent, in Title 1 elementary schools in second and sixth grades. A sealant is a thin coating of plastic applied to the biting surface of molars to protect against cavity-causing bacteria. The treatment has been proven to be 86% effective in preventing tooth decay. Dental hygienists also provide dental education, assessment and referrals as needed.
