Florida’s Healthy Babies is an effort of the Department’s Health Equity Program Council, which focuses on helping all Floridians achieve health equity, or the highest level of health. Recognizing the complex issues around infant mortality, the first step of the Florida Healthy Babies Initiative was to assess existing Department programs and priorities to determine best practices. Based on this assessment, Florida Department of Health in Brevard County (DOH-Brevard) partnered with 3 hospitals, Parrish Medical Center, Cape Canaveral Hospital, and Holmes Regional Hospital, to carry out the Baby Steps to Baby Friendly project which enhances hospital maternity care practices that support and promote breastfeeding. In addition, safe sleep initiatives are promoted throughout all DOH-Brevard clinics.
